NTR entered into politics in 1982 with the unique slogan "telugu jaati aatmagouravam" (self-respect of telugu people). He launched a new political party Telugu Desam and campaigned day and night on his chaitanya ratham driven by his son Hari Krishna. He toured all the state. People, frustrated with Congress Party's acts like changing Chief Ministers in the state, got attracted to NTR's slogan "telugu jaati aatmagouravam" and his welfare schemes like "Rs 2/- a Kg. Rice". His party Telugu Desam contested to all 294 assembly constituencies in the state and came into power with a awesome majority, by defeating ruling Congress Party in the elections held in 1983. Once became the Chief Minister, he implemented lot of welfare schemes for poor people. He used to say "prajalE naa dEvuLLu, samaajamE naa dEvaalayam".
He went to USA in 1985 to undergo a bypass surgery. Mr. Nadendla Bhaskara Rao, who was with him from the day he entered into politics, No.2 in his cabinet back stabbed him with the support from Congress Party and then Governor of A.P. Mr. Ramlal. He lost his power to Mr. Nadendla. Obviously, people were with NTR, there was a huge revolution through out the state. After a month of political fight, he re sworn in as CM, dissolved the assembly and went for fresh mandate. He again came back to power with tremendous majority. His son-in-law and now CM of AP, Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu, played a crucial role during the 1985 August crisis. He was the man behind scenes, who united all the MLA's in favor of NTR.
NTR played an important role at national level too. He was the man behind the formation of National Front by uniting regional parties against Congress, which in turn brought Mr. V.P.Singh into power.
He was sensational through out his life. He did every thing like that. People liked it too. He took sanyasam for some time, acted in films when he was CM.
NTR lost his power to Congress in 1989 general elections,after 7 years of ruling, chose to sit in the opposition benches. He led many agitations against government as an opposition leader, acted in films when he was in opposition too.
NTR announced his decision of second marriage amidst of his fans and followers at the 100 th celebrations of his film Major Chandrakanth, produced, co-starred by Mohan Babu and directed by K.Raghavendra Rao. He married Lakshmi Parvati, a divorcee, who came to him for writing his biography. Being his wife she started interfering into party and political affairs. She played a key role in 1994 elections. NTR campaigned through out the state accompanied by her amidst of bad health. His party Telugu Desam won majority seats, he sworn in as CM of AP once again.
In 1995, MLA's, fed up with his second wife's involvement into party and government activities, took revolt against him under the leadership of his son-in-law and present Chief Minister of AP Mr.Chandra Babu Naidu, with the support from his politically active son Hari Krishna and son-in-law Daggupati Venkateswara Rao. NTR lost his power and party to his son-in-law MR.Chandra Babu Naidu. After that NTR launched a new political party on his own and getting ready for the forth coming parliament elections. He wanted to prove once again that people are with him.
NTR left us on January 18, 1996 at the age of 73. Though he left us physically, Telugu people never forget the great NTR. As long as Telugu people are there, NTR will be there. As long as people remember Lords Rama, Krishna and Venkateswara, they remember NTR too.
